Volunteer Opportunities

Serving as a coach is one of the most rewarding ways to get involved with Girls on the Run. Our volunteer coaches lead their teams through the Girls on the Run-developed curriculum, stretching and running activities, and training for the end-of-season 5K. You do not need to be a runner or a competitive athlete. Successful coaches need only serve as a role model for girls by showing up prepared and on time, listening attentively, and by demonstrating a positive attitude! This position works closely with the Girls on the Run staff and requires a commitment of 2-3 hours per week for the 10 week season, with additional time required for the GOTR 5K race. We need an average of 500 volunteer coaches per season to deliver our program in Northern Virginia. We can’t do it without YOU.

5K Volunteer

There is a 5k (3.1 miles) run at the conclusion of each 10-week Girls on the Run program. The Girls on the Run 5k is a unique, end-of-season event that brings together thousands of NOVA girls, their families, and community members for a celebratory 5k run.

Each 5k event takes over 100 volunteers to be a success. We depend on volunteers to serve as greeters, buddy runners, course marshals, manage start and finish lines, water stops, and much more. We have a job for everyone who wants to help!

Take a look at all of the volunteer opportunities and shifts for the Woodbridge 5k on Saturday, May 13th HERE. For the Ballston 5k on Sunday, May 21st, please check out the volunteer opportunities HERE.

In the days leading up to each 5k run, we also need volunteer support at our Packet Pick-Ups to check-in runners and distribute their t-shirts and bibs. Please take a look at our Packet Pick-Up volunteer opportunities HERE.

Team Adelaide

Team Adelaide members are a vital resource for Girls on the Run, acting as eyes and ears out in the field. Team Adelaide volunteers are assigned specific sites and will visit each site once a season during the site’s scheduled practice time. Team Adelaides are not responsible for directly facilitating the Girls on the Run curriculum to the girls, but are there to support the Coaches and program participants. You’ll attend a couple practices a season to observe and participate, while gathering feedback from our teams on how we can improve program implementation and better support our teams and coaches. This is a great opportunity if you would like to see our program in action, but cannot commit to being a full time coach.
